Years ago I created a framework, the Artistic Thinking Process (ATP), to capture the thinking process my students learn and practice as they do the work of artists with increasing independence. ATP is something I use to plan in my own teaching, as well as to communicate my thinking to other teachers. I’ve never really used the actual text of it with students because it’s just too wordy.
However, I’m redesigning my classroom as part of getting ready for the new semester and noticed I had a space on a bulletin board that needed a poster.
Then I realized that the poster I wanted and needed was a student-friendly version of ATP.
I’ll use this poster with students in the new semester frequently, I think.
I love to ask questions that promote independent thinking and the three on this poster will be very helpful to use with the new students I get to meet next week.
Where can you find ideas you are excited about?
What do you need to know to make your ideas come to life?
How will you respond to challenges as you make art?
They capture big ideas that I deeply believe in about what is important for students to know and be able to do.
